Regional AHEC's: NCI-AHEC
North Central Indiana Area Health Education Center Selects Executive Director
Logansport native Jeremy Ashcraft has been selected as Executive Director for the newly formed North Central Indiana Area Health Education Center. Most recently, Ashcraft was the Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation Coordinator. AHEC's mission is to improve access to quality healthcare and eliminate health disparities through community and academic partnerships. The AHEC program office will be located in Rochester Indiana and will be hosted by the Fulton Economic Development Corporation.
Ashcraft will be a FEDCO employee and work closely with the Indiana AHEC office and the Indiana University School of Medicine's Department of Family Medicine to organize healthcare enrichment programs in medically underserved communities in a thirteen county region. The NCI-AHEC will include Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Fulton, Howard, Miami, Pulaski, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Warren, and White counties. An advisory board representing the counties in the NCI-AHEC region will work closely with Ashcraft to determine programming needs.
The AHEC methodology is founded in a "grow our own approach." AHEC works to increase awareness of potential healthcare careers among K-12 minority students and students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, AHEC then facilitates the clinical rotation of healthcare students into medically underserved rural and urban communities. The hope is those students will decide to practice in those communities. Continuing education for healthcare professionals will also be available through the AHEC program.
