How AHEC Makes a Difference

Find them – Outreach to under-represented minority and disadvantaged students in Indiana. 65% of AHEC trainees from Under represented minority and disadvantaged backgrounds have matriculated into post-secondary training.Indiana's matriculation of all students to post secondary education (public and private institutions is 67.3%. [Federal higher education data collection system (IPEDS), 2010].Indiana's matriculation of Black or African American students (44%) and Hispanic students (47%) to public institutions, (Indiana Commission on Higher Education).

Train them for healthcare jobs in Indiana Between July 2011 and June 2012, 1,390 health profession trainees participated in AHEC-supported programs. Of those surveyed, 82% reported intent to eventually serve in Indiana, 81% reported intent to eventually serve in medically underserved communities and/or with medically underserved patients, 53% reported intent to eventually serve in rural areas and 52% reported intent to eventually serve in primary care.

Retain them in healthcare jobs in Indiana Approximately 585 past AHEC participants have been identified as practicing in primary care as physicians, nurses, physician assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, pharmacists, and mental health providers. Of those identified, 26% are currently working in a medically underserved area.
